Welcome to Classics κτλ.
This site is devoted to the teaching and learning of Classical Languages, History, and Culture.
Charles W. Oughton is a PhD Candidate in Classics at the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on Greek and Latin Historiography, especially on the reception and incorporation of Greek historical writing in the works of the Roman historians. He is an avid teacher of Greek, Latin, and the History of the Ancient World. He is also interested in Greek and Latin pedagogy (some of which you can see on this site) and, in particular, the incorporation of the linguistics approach to the more typical grammar and reading approaches applied to beginning Greek and Latin learning.
This love of historical linguistics and Greek teaching has led him to co-author a textbook, Ancient Greek: A Diachronic Approach, drafts of which have been used in the Summer Greek program at UT Austin for the last few years. The book reformulates and expands the Lexis method of Gareth Morgan, whose work has been the basis for the Summer Intensive Greek program at UT Austin for over forty years. AGDA uses at its heart a historical linguistic approach to teaching Greek morphology, then applies the forms the students are learning to unadapted passages of Classical Greek as quickly as possible. Because of the book's linguistic approach to morphology Students who learn from AGDA are able to transition between various dialects and time periods and to read extended passages of original Greek at ease.
